Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners often live in the communities they serve, treat kin and work across clinical and cultural roles. This three-hour course applies the Board's Code of conduct and Professional capabilities to that reality.
The course starts with a profession built for and by community, the National Law, the Board and Ahpra, the registration standards and the Code and capabilities. Ethical foundations follow: ethics in two worlds, a decision-making approach for community practice, cultural safety duties and advocacy.
Scope gets a full section, explaining that there is no defined scope, how medicines law varies by jurisdiction, working with nurses and doctors and escalating safely. Consent lessons cover community settings, family and kinship, difficult conversations and patients who decline care. Boundaries lessons cover living and working in the same community, treating kin, gifts and reciprocity, and social media.
Later sections cover confidentiality when everyone knows everyone, privacy law, records, Medicare and honest claiming, mandatory notifications, child protection and family violence reporting, lateral violence, cultural load, wellbeing, CPD, supervising and leading, and new challenges such as virtual care.
