Ethics and Professionalism Courses for Doctors in Ireland

All doctors registered in Ireland are legally required to maintain their professional competence, which means annual enrolment on a Professional Competence Scheme run by a scheme operator recognised by the Medical Council (in practice, a postgraduate training body). Under the Maintenance of Professional Competence framework and the MPC Rules (S.I. No. 176 of 2025), doctors record at least 50 hours (credits) of CPD each year across four categories.

What the Medical Council expects

  • Each PCS year you must be enrolled on a Professional Competence Scheme run by a scheme operator recognised by the Medical Council.
  • The 50 annual CPD credits must include a Professional Development Plan (Planning CPD, up to 5 credits), at least 10 for Practice Review, at least 15 for Work-based Learning and at least 20 for Accredited Continuing Education.
  • All eight Domains of Good Professional Practice must be assigned to your CPD at least once in every three years.
  • Your scheme issues a Statement of Participation each year, you declare compliance at registration retention, and the Medical Council audits a sample of doctors.
