About this course

Practising with conditions or undertakings means working to a set of exact obligations, and a missed approval or late report can become a new concern. This course helps practitioners understand their restrictions word by word and set up a compliance system that works.

The course explains conditions and undertakings, how restrictions arise, the National Restrictions Library and Ahpra protocols, and publication. It then covers getting started: reading your restrictions word by word, your monitoring plan and case officer, approvals before you practise, notifying places of practice and setting up a compliance system.

Supervision and mentoring restrictions are covered in detail, including the supervised practice framework, nominating a supervisor, working well under supervision and reports. Education, audit and practice restrictions lessons cover education requirements, reflective reports, audits and restrictions on practice, patient contact and medication access.

Later sections deal with health restrictions, drug and alcohol screening, missed screens, looking after yourself, what counts as a breach, why breaches happen, what to do if you breach or might breach, changes in circumstances and applying for review, variation and removal.

What you will learn

  • Know whether you are bound by a condition or an undertaking, how it arose and who can see it
  • Use the National Restrictions Library, Ahpra protocols, your monitoring plan and your case officer to understand each requirement
  • Obtain every approval you need before practising and set up a system to stay compliant
  • Work well under supervision, mentoring, education, audit and practice limits
  • Attend health monitoring and screening reliably and respectfully
  • Prevent breaches, and report any breach or change of circumstances quickly and honestly
  • Build a strong application to vary or end restrictions and lodge it with the right body

How the course works

  1. After checkout the course is added to My Courses in your account, so you can start straight away on any device with a modern browser.

  2. Move through 7 sections (30 lessons in total) in your own time; lessons open in sequence and the player remembers where you stopped on that device.

  3. Each section ends with key points and prompts for reflection. Your notes can be downloaded as a Word course pack or printed for your portfolio.

  4. Sit the 15-question assessment at the end. Score 80% or more (12 of 15) to pass; answer options are reshuffled if you retake.

  5. Complete the reflective account and feedback to finish. Your certificate of completion shows the estimated learning time (about 2 hours), and you record the time you actually spend in your CPD log.

Questions about this course

How is a condition different from an undertaking?

A condition is imposed by a Board, panel or tribunal; an undertaking is a promise you give to the Board. Both restrict practice and both are enforceable.

What is the National Restrictions Library?

A library of standard restriction wording and accompanying protocols used by Ahpra and the Boards, which explain what each type of restriction requires in practice.

I think I may have breached a condition. What now?

Act quickly: tell your case officer, get advice and fix the cause. Breaching a condition is itself unprofessional conduct under the National Law, so prevention and prompt honesty matter.

When will I be able to ask for my conditions to be lifted?

It depends on how they were imposed and by whom. The course explains when and where to apply and how to build a strong application.

What evidence do I get when I finish?

You receive a certificate of completion stating the estimated learning time, and you can download a course pack holding your learning record, a revision sheet and your own reflections. Your CPD log should show the time you actually spend.

Does completing the course satisfy a condition or undertaking?

Not automatically. Where a Board has set education as a condition or undertaking, the course usually has to be nominated and accepted first, so check with Ahpra or the Board, and your legal adviser or defence organisation, before you enrol.
